Research Project: Sporosan® as a salt-based solid
Background information
Persistent bacterial spores, which can withstand even established alcohol-based disinfectants, still pose a major challenge. When ingested, they can release toxins that lead to diarrhea and vomiting, with severe cases potentially resulting in death. Sporicidal disinfectants are therefore of utmost importance for society.
Information on the funding project
As part of a project funded by the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), with a duration of 2.5 years, we aimed to make Sporosan® available in the form of salt tabs or granulate mixtures for rinsing devices. Similar to dishwasher tabs, the user can place a disinfectant tab in the washer, effectively killing all microorganisms and bacterial spores on the items to be cleaned. Thanks to the ERDF support, we were able to investigate the process of generating the active substance from salt-based solids and optimize its shelf life, stability, and efficacy. With a funding amount of more than half a million euros, the implementation of microbiological tests and studies on the toxicity of the active substance were also made possible, which simultaneously serve as a basis for the intended biocide approval of Sporosan®.
Until now, the Sporosan® disinfectant active substance has been generated by combining two liquid components; the use of this two-component system is easily feasible on an industrial scale, particularly in professional cleaning and disinfection equipment. However, it requires operation by trained personnel. One goal of the project was to make the Sporosan® disinfection system accessible for use by untrained personnel through the development of salt tabs, enabling the disinfection of spore-contaminated items in healthcare facilities to be carried out at any time in a user-friendly manner. In addition, the use of salt-based solids reduces transport weight and volume, as no water is required for the granular mixture.
This project was co-financed by the European Union from the European Regional Development Fund. Operational Programme ESF Mecklenburg-Vorpommern 2014-2020 – Investments in Growth and Education.
Patent Application for an Innovative Disinfectant with Extended Efficacy Duration
- Nebula Biocides GmbH develops sporicidal disinfectants, specifically designed for the disinfection of medical devices
- Thanks to the latest invention, a disinfecting effect can also be achieved with longer exposure times (3-15 minutes)
This allows for the disinfection of complex systems or surfaces with prior lengthy distribution
The patent application is supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) – Programme of the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern – Funding period 2021 to 2027.
